Nextcloud: backup and ransomware protection

Nextcloud is not just storage. Together with backups and file versions it lowers the risk of data loss from outages, user mistakes, or ransomware.

Why back up the cloud

Ransomware often encrypts files on disks and in synced folders. One copy on the server is not enough.

You need layers: versions in Nextcloud, regular backups outside production storage, and a clear restore path.

Previous file versions and trash in Nextcloud. Restore one document without a full server rebuild.

File and database snapshots per plan. Backups kept separate from day to day operations.

Limit spread of encryption: 2FA, permissions, monitoring. Backups attackers cannot easily delete.

Steps after an incident. Recovery tests on higher plans when agreed.

Backups on EU infrastructure per contract (frequency and retention per plan).
